Soothing Beverages May Calm Your Stomach, But Do They Treat Constipation?

Reaching for a hot cup of ginger or peppermint tea can soothe an upset stomach, but health experts warn that a calm stomach does not automatically mean relief from constipation. While certain beverages ease specific digestive symptoms, their ability to soften stool or promote colon motility varies greatly and is not equally supported by scientific evidence.

According to the U.S. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, consuming sufficient fluids alongside dietary fiber helps soften stool, making it easier to pass. However, simply drinking extra water will not resolve every case of constipation. Daily hydration remains essential, though individuals with heart or kidney conditions should follow specific fluid limits set by their physicians.

Specific ingredients offer mixed results when it comes to bowel regularity. Research indicates that ginger effectively alleviates certain types of nausea, yet little evidence proves that homemade ginger tea improves colon motility. Similarly, while concentrated peppermint oil can ease specific gut symptoms, peppermint leaf tea is not a proven laxative and may worsen heartburn or acid reflux in some people. Coffee can stimulate bowel movements for certain individuals, but it acts as a personal trigger rather than a universal remedy.

Prune juice stands out with stronger clinical backing. A 2022 randomized trial supported its benefits in improving constipation symptoms and stool consistency, largely due to its natural sorbitol content, which draws water into the intestines. However, excessive consumption can cause gas or diarrhea, and its sugar content should be monitored by people with diabetes. Fermented drinks like kefir show limited evidence for constipation, while unstrained whole-fruit smoothies can provide beneficial fiber if introduced gradually to avoid bloating.

Medical professionals advise against relying solely on popular morning remedies if constipation persists. Urgent medical evaluation is required if bowel difficulty is accompanied by blood in the stool, persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, or an inability to pass gas.
