Flávio Bolsonaro Rejects Election Outcome, Calls for Annulment

Controversial Voting Extension

Defeated presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro announced he will seek to annul Brazil’s presidential election, calling a last-minute ruling by Supreme Court Minister Cristiano Zanin to extend voting hours unacceptable. The ruling allowed voting to continue until 7 p.m. following an urgent request from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s campaign.

Lula’s campaign filed the request citing public transportation shortages that disrupted voter access. Zanin granted the two-hour nationwide extension, but because the decision arrived after the standard 5 p.m. cutoff, poll workers across the country faced severe confusion as many polling stations had already closed and begun dismantling voting equipment.

Claims of Inequity and Legal Challenges

Bolsonaro criticized the ruling, pointing out Zanin’s past background as Lula’s defense attorney and accusing the minister of altering rules mid-election. He argued that the Supreme Court overstepped its bounds by bypassing the Superior Electoral Court, creating a total breach of equality among voters in different states and municipalities.

Asserting that it is impossible to recognize the final results that re-elected President Lula, Bolsonaro confirmed his team will formally request the annulment of the election.
